WELCOME TO ASID 2018
It is with great pleasure that I invite you to participate in the 52nd Australasian Society for Intellectual Disability (ASID) Conference. This year, the conference will be held at the Gold Coast Convention Centre, Queensland from Wednesday 14th November to Friday 16th November 2018.
This year’s Conference theme is Let’s Shake it up, human rights for everyone. The theme was chosen by a group of self-advocates and reflects their vision of a world in which human rights are truly extended to ALL people.
This theme extends a challenge and an invitation to come together as researchers, practitioners, service providers, governments, families and people with a lived experience of intellectual disability to debate, discuss and collaborate on better ways to make inclusion and equal rights a reality.
The Conference program strives to provide an innovative and inclusive space for participants to respond to this call for action through a range of exceptional keynote speakers, invited guests, concurrent papers and poster presentations.
There are many ways to be involved with the conference and we encourage you to explore one or many of the options.
Individually, or with your colleagues or supporters you might choose to submit one or more abstracts in accordance with the Submission Guidelines. We invite submissions from people with intellectual disability and their families, those who work at all levels of disability support services, academics, health, social care and educational professionals and policy makers. We seek proposals for posters, papers, symposia, round tables and workshops that fit within the broad conference theme “Let’s shake it up, human rights for everyone”.
In addition to a varied and stimulating scientific program, ASID conferences always have a strong focus on keeping the conversations flowing through a social program which provides the time and space to network, collaborate and stimulate the ideas and initiatives that enact change.
There are numerous sponsorship opportunities available, including participating in our trade stall display which always attracts a lot of interest and engagement from participants during breaks and the social program.
Or, you may just wish to attend the conference as a delegate and soak up all the program has to offer.
Whichever way you choose to participate, I strongly encourage you to join us for this call to action, to shake it up together!
Laura Hogan, ASID President
Let’s shake it up, human rights for everyone
The Conference theme was chosen by a group of self-advocates and it speaks to their vision. Their vision: that things need to change so that people with intellectual disability finally achieve the same rights that others enjoy (that has been denied and continue to be denied).
AIM OF THE CONFERENCE
The conference aims to present an inclusive and exciting program with many opportunities for discussion and debate. ASID’s focus is research to practice – the dialogue between researchers, practitioners, service providers, governments, families and people with intellectual disability which has the goal of finding better ways to support inclusion for individuals and to change systems.
The Australasian Society for Intellectual Disability is a nearly 50 year old organisation that champions research and evidence-based best practice in the field of intellectual disability. It is well respected amongst people with intellectual disabilities and their families, providers of services to people with intellectual disabilities and all levels of government departments concerned with people with disabilities.
