Dr Kathy Ellem
Dr Kathy Ellem is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work at the University of Queensland, Australia. She has been an advocate, researcher, lecturer, and social worker in the disability field for over twenty years.
Kathy is a parent of a young man with intellectual disability and it is from this experience that her interest and passion for improving the lives of people with intellectual disability began. Kathy’s program of research centers on the lived experiences of people with cognitive disability, particularly those people with complex support needs and multiple disadvantage who have come into contact with the criminal justice system. She has a particular interest in participatory research methodologies, including life story, digital and arts-based research. Her hope is that the voice of people with cognitive disabilities will have an everyday place in research, practice and policy and that ASID can play an important role in making this happen.
